Nawaz Sharif: 2nd Tenure

Economic Policy:

"Pay debts off to make the country well off"

Overseas Pakistanis and the local population were

requested to deposit any amount in the Prime Minister's debts off funds in Banks

There was a negative Balance of payment during this time. To make the country better he requested the population to donate to the cause

It was expected that Pakistan would pay off 50% of its debts, however, Pakistan was not able to stand up on its feet economically

Conflict and Reforms in the Military:

A serious conflict and confrontation emerged on the scene between the PM and the military generals

The confrontation led to the resignation of General Jahangir Keramat on October 7 1998

General Karamat was replaced by General Pervez Musharraf

Sharif then also appointed General Musharraf as Chairman of the joint chiefs of staff committee despite Musharraf's lack of seniority

Problems:

Arguments with the Supreme Court: PM's attempt to limit the power of the supreme court by reducing the court from 17 to 12, set off a serious constitutional crisis with long-lasting consequences

Nuclear Program:

An achievement but it created a grave problem for the PM as the country faced trade and arms sanctions.

The first nuclear testing was on the 28th and 30th of May 1998, in the Chagai Hills, Balochistan

The End:

There was a conflict between the Pakistan Army and the government of Nawaz Sharif

The Government lost the support of the Army

The Economy was about to collapse

Political Instability in the country

On 12th October 1999, General Pervaiz Musharraf toppled the government and declared an emergency in the country
