The Schlieffen Plan

The Schlieffen Plan was a German war plan created more than a decade before the war. In the plan, Germany would invade France and capture Paris by advancing through Belgium and Luxembourg, neutral countries. Then the Germans would attack Russia by mobilizing their troops on the Eastern front after defeating France

The Schlieffen plan failed as Belgium halted the German advance and defended its land. Belgium was also allied with the United Kingdom which caused 125,000 troops of the BEF to come and protect Belgium and French Lands. The British and Belgians halted the German advance and put up a good fight. Russia mobilized its troops quicker than expected; therefore, Germany had to retreat from the western front and defend itself against the Russians. Hence, a stalemate occurred on the western front
